My story

Hello everyone, I am the developer of the Catartika™ Method and I'd like to tell you a bit about myself. I am originally from Italy and since I was a little girl I have always loved dance and the arts in general. In 1996 I decided to come to the US where, over the years, I obtained a B.A. in Dance, a B.A. in Psychology, an M.A. in Art History, an MSW and a clinical license (LCSW). I am also certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and I specialize in the treatment of trauma. As you can see from my background, I have experience in dance, art and psychotherapy and that's what lead to the development of Catartika™.

Dancing is good for the soul!

Before entering the workforce as a licensed psychotherapist, I spent over 15 years teaching dance in different settings. Even after becoming licensed, I continued to teach dance and to choreograph because I couldn't imagine a life without dancing. Dance has always been my self-care, something that kept me mentally sane and happy even during some very difficult times. Over the years, I read a lot of research articles on the benefits of dance on mental health and, based on my own experience as well as those studies, I decided to develop Catartika™ to bring the benefits of dance to everyone.

The benefits of Catartika™

Catartika™ is unique because it involves a deeper connection between mind and body. Catartika™ is NOT a regular dance class as the focus of the class is not learning a dance technique or learning a choreography for a show. Catartika™ is structured so that the participants are guided into exploring their own movements and emotions based on specific instructions. Yes, at some point we might learn a few steps but the focus of Catartika™ is to let go of stress, stagnant emotions, worries, and even old emotional wounds through the power of dance/movement improvisation. During class there will be some talking and sharing, but nobody is forced to do so if they don't want to. Participants might experience strong emotions, some positive some negative. That is normal and part of the process of "letting go" to reach a happier state.
*Disclaimer: Catartika™ is NOT a regular dance class and it is NOT a therapy session or meant to be a substitute for your regular mental health services/medication.
